Refractive indices of several solvents at 633 nm have been interpolated via an accurately obeyed Cauchy dispersion from measured values at other wavelengths (λ0). A dependence on solvent has been observed for the measured partial specific volume of polystyrene in solution and the values are smaller than the specific volume of the polymer. Polynomials are presented for calibration of a differential refractometer with aq. KCl at different values ofλ0including 633 nm. Specific refractive index increments (dn/dc) of polystyrene in several solvents, measured at three values ofλ0, follows a Cauchy dispersion, which yields values at 633 nm in good accord with those measured directly at this wavelength. Various procedures are discussed for obtaining dn/dcby calculation, but even the most favourable is recommended only for systems in which dn/dc⩾ca± 0.15 cm3g−1. Total Rayleigh ratios of several liquids for vertically polarized light at 633 nm have been determined on the basis of a standard value for benzene.
