A 32-year-old homeless, nonobese, African American male with a 3-year history of chronic paranoid schizophrenia was voluntarily admitted to the inpatient psychiatric hospital. Although admitted voluntarily, the patient was unable to care for himself; therefore, a 1-year court committal was obtained.
