The rate of intentional injury to younger children has increased over the past decade. This article discusses the outcomes of inflicted traumatic brain injury during infancy and early childhood. We discuss both the short and long term effects of injury. A post-traumatic stress disorder model is proposed as a way of integrating both physical and psychological effects of trauma occurring in younger children, We discuss results of studies that suggest that there may be a synergistic interaction between sequelae of inflicted traumatic brain injury and physiological changes associated with chronic stress.
