Elevated temperature is one of four cardinal inflammatory signs and the only one that can be both objectively and quantitatively evaluated. A substantial body of evidence in a variety of experimental systems demonstrates that subgingival temperature is higher in inflamed sites, and cooler in comparable healthy sites. The article presents a study that evaluates the accuracy and reliability of this instrument, and describes potential applications of temperature in periodontal clinical trials. To obtain a stable temperature bath for these experiments a calibrated heater-circulator was placed in an insulated water bath.
