Areas of prophase, telophase and energic cells and nucleic were measured in well-flattened squash preparations of the pith of Nicotiana tomentosa 6-7 in. below the stem apex. Under the conditions of the expt. area is roughly proportional to vol. The chromosomes of the prophases and telophases were counted. When logs of cell and nuclear areas were plotted against one another, the prophases and telophases were distr. in distinct groups according to chromosome number-__4[image], 8[image] or 16[image] (no 2[image] cells were present). Energic cell and nuclear sizes also fell into 3 relatively distinct classes. The relationship of the classes of energic cells and nuclei to those at prophase provided evidence of the probable chromosome numbers in the three classes of energic nuclei. Sizes of prophase cells and nuclei were apparently the same whether the nuclei contained, for example, the 8[image] number of 2-chromatid chromosomes or the 4[image] number of 4-chromatid ones. Telophase nuclear vol. in 4[image], 8[image], and 16[image] classes did not deviate significantly from a 1:2:4 ratio. The same apparently applied to vols. of energic nuclei with successive steps in polysomaty. At prophase, however, the factor of nuclear volume increase was greater with each duplication of the chromosome number. Cell vol. at each of the 3 nuclear stages increased by a factor of approx. 3 with each doubling of the chromosome number.
