Tested 2 major assumptions of the ideal free distribution (IFD), an optimal foraging model, which predicts the equilibrium distribution of organisms among patch resources. An experiment was performed with a free-living population of mallard ducks that were trained to congregate at the study site at a specific time each morning over 12 days. Bread was distributed at a high and low rate at food sites about 16 m apart. Results show a striking deviation from the IFD's prediction of habitat matching. Violations of the ideal assumption due to perceptual constraints are concluded to be a major cause of departures from the IFD.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
