From a study on the ontogeny ofMonstera deliciosaandM. pertusaleaves it was found that the holes developed at an early stage by the necrosis of small patches of tissue. At the time of their inception pairs of necrotic spots inM. deliciosawere equally spaced within the block of tissue marked off by each pair of lateral nerves. InM. pertusathe first series of spots was followed by a second series parallel with the lateral nerves and these in turn by a third series parallel with and close to the midrib of the leaf. The fenestration patterns observed inMonsteraandAponogetonare compared with the colour pigmentation patterns to be seen in members of the Marantaceae. The great similarity of pigment and necrosis patterns suggest that both may be due to diffusion reactions. The physiology of the diffusion-reaction process is briefly discussed.-Roy. bot. Gdns, Kew.
