An easily accessible fluorescent chemosensor bearing a naphthalimide group has been designed. The chemosensor is highly selective and sensitive for Cu2+ ions in ethanol-water solution compared with other tested metal ions and anions. The chemosensor, which contains a C=N group, fluoresces weakly when excited at 340 nm. Upon addition of Cu2+ ions, a fluorescent enhancement is observed with emission at lambda(em)= 433 nm, and no such significant changes are found with other metal ions and anions. With optimized conditions, the linear fluorescence enhancement of the sensor towards Cu2+ ions is in the range of 0.05-1.5 mu m with a detection limit of 0.025 mu m.
