Word blindness suddenly occurred in a right-handed patient with a past clinical history of lues and arterial hypertension. Right homonymous hemianopsia, dysgraphia in copying, colour agnosia, constitutional apraxia and slight anomia accompanied the disturbance. There was no effect on receptive speech. On the various functions associated with reading the optic and acoustic components are most important. Since visual and auditory facilitating tests provided a transitory effect on lexia, "pure" alexia is interpreted as a disruption of the functional connexions between the various anatomical structures and pathways related to normal reading patterns.
