Handwriting is the convenient tool for recording ideas symbolically that has come down to us through the ages as part of our cultural heritage. Writing is a hallmark of literacy and in earlier times served as a mark of class distinction, since few had the time or facilities to learn to write. Because long-continued practice is required for mastering the skill, writing has always been the concern of schools and professional teachers, meriting a prominent place among the skills taught at school. In the pages that follow, all reference will be to cursive-script or print-script styles utilizing the Roman alphabet. This chapter examines the following topics: Characteristics of handwriting; The process of learning to write; Writing as a developmental process; Motor developments in handwriting; Writing from memory in relation to development; Sequential stages in early attempts to write; Directions of stroke in writing; Variability in handwriting; Problems in handwriting; Progress in handwriting instruction; Basic handwriting; Writing as a basic tool in the unified program; Simpler writing styles; Individual adjustments; Obsolete techniques are discarded; and The teacher and the writing specialist.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
