Acyl radicals appear to react as units below about 100 rather than disintegrating to carbonmonoxide and alkyl radicals. There is alsoevidence that carbon monoxide rapidly combines with simple alkyl radicals to yield acyl radicals. These conclusions are based on an examination of acyl radicals derived by:(1) disintegration of some diacyl diimides,(2) hydro-gen abstraction from aldehydes by alkyl radicals and (3) carbon monoxide addition by alkyl radicals. Support is also given by theoretical and experimental work which has been reported in the literature.
