METHODSObservations were made on six subjects undergoing exhaustive treadmill running under three thermal conditions: 1) a condition in which the active hyperthermia induced by the exercise would be similar to that experienced by an individual undergoing heavy exercise in a nonlaboratory setting at a “normal” ambient temperature(23= t 1 “C); 2) a hyperthermal condition, in which the rate of active hyperthermia was accelerated over that in the normal condition; and 3) a hypothermal condition, in which the rate of active hyperthermia was less than in the normal condition.
