The results of a study of blood platelet 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) levels in 20 normal controls and 88 psychiatric patients are reported.
5HT levels in the controls are comparable to those of other studies. The levels in three groups of patients—schizophrenics, psychotic depressions, and a non-psychotic group—were higher than normal, to a statistically significant degree in the latter two. There was some indication of a temporal factor related to duration of illness, length of hospitalization or degree of chronicity, tending to raise 5HT levels in schizophrenia but no statistically significant regression with age itself was observed.
