The promise that medical anthropology would mature into a discipline that would cumulatively contribute to anthropological theory and practice has not yet been fulfilled. We propose that an analytic framework combining the emic perspective of ethnomedicine with the etic measures of bioscience can generate valuable new interpretations for cross-cultural, comparative studies of human physiological processes, the ways in which such processes are perceived, and the culture-specific behaviors these perceptions produce. Case studies of the bioscientific assessment of Mexican herbal medicines and the biomedical features of the Latin Ameri-can folk illness syndrome susto will illustrate our approach. We argue that this framework can produce results that further the development of testable theory in medical anthropology.
