In recent years, there has been increasing interest in isolating compounds with biological activity from cyanobacteria.3 The cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa is well-known for the production of the toxic cyclic peptide microcystins,4 but it also produces several linear peptides that are potent protease inhibitors. These linear peptides, the aeruginosins5 and microginins,6 contain unusual amino acid residues unique to cyanobacteria. Recently, the X-ray crystal structures of the trypsin-aeruginosin 98B7 and thrombin-aeruginosin 298A8 complexes have been reported. In this paper, we report on the structure and biological activity of a novel peptide, aeruginosamide, isolated from a bloom of the cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa.
