A 2-step production of [18F]F2 was developed that exploits the advantageous yield of the 18O(p,n)18F reaction. A passivated [Ni] target is 1st charged with 95.2% enriched 18O2 and irradiated with 10-MeV protons resulting in a thick-target saturation yield of 150 mCi/.mu.A. The 18F activity is adsorbed on the target walls, permitting quantitative, cryogenic retrieval of the enriched target gas. The target is then refilled with a noble-gas + F2 mixture and again irradiated, inducing isotopic exchange reactions between the adsorbed 18F and the molecular F2. After a brief bombardment, this purge gas is suitable for [18F]F2-addition reactions, in particular the synthesis of 18F-labeled 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]-2-FDG). Preliminary studies, in which the noble gas, F2 concentrations and target temperatures were varied, are discussed.
