In Japan, a country that continues to face the challenges associated with a declining and aging population, the debate continues regarding whether regional communities will survive or disappear. Using population data, Masuda (2014) showed that many municipalities are on the verge of extinction. However, many researchers in rural sociology and rural studies have refuted the report using examples of connections that transcend space. For example, there are weekend farmers, successor heirs who return to their family home on the weekends to farm (Odagiri, 2014; Tokuno & Kashio, 2014); overlooked community members from outside the village (Yamashita, 2012); and multi-regional constituents (Yamashita, 2014).I also believe that judging the continuation or extinction of regional communities based on a limited number of indicators, such as local government financial indicators and the aging rate, is akin to diagnostic mistakes made by an inexperienced doctor. Although the status of each municipality can be understood, albeit roughly, based on such indicators, many municipalities that have been “pronounced dead” are full of people living their lives with energy.
