Platelets are importantly concerned with thrombus formation. Our data indicate that thrombocytosis is commonly associated with neoplasms and is sometimes of marked degree. It seems possible, therefore, that the increase of circulating platelets in patients with tumors may be related to their tendency to develop thrombophlebitis. The mechanism by which the thrombocytosis is produced is unknown; however, direct involvement of the bone marrow by the tumor does not appear to be necessary. Thrombocytosis is often considered to be an indicator of a myeloproliferative disease. It may provide a clue to previously unsuspected disease and may be especially valuable as an indicator of underlying malignant disease in patients in whom the diagnosis is uncertain.
