The presence of laminar flow by direct observation was confirmed in veins ranging from the smallest mesenteric radicles of the rabbit to the abdominal vena cava of a dog weighing 14 kg. Reynolds numbers in the dog vena cava were 1000 at maximum. In the human the number of 2000 may be reached in mild exercise. In the thoracic venae cavae, where marked phasic variations in flow were present, the flow pattern was more complex. The effect of respiratory movements on the vessel lumen and flow pattern is discussed.
