Raman spectroscopy is becoming increasingly important as an analytical and diagnostic tool for the investigation of precious and brittle objects of art and antiquities. In addition to this introductory paper, this special issue of the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy contains 31 papers dedicated to this subject.
