This paper describes an experimental program that tested the effect of epoxy coating thickness on bond strength by using No. 19 reinforcing bars with coating thicknesses ranging from 160-510 um. The resulting reduction in bond strength caused by epoxy coatings is largely independent of coating thickness. However, the reduction becomes significant for coatings thicker than 420 um. When combined with prior research on bars ranging in size from No. 10 to No. 36, the results demonstrate that an increase in the maximum allowable coating thickness, from 300 um to 420 um, is justified for No. 19 and larger reinforcing bars in the ASTM standard.
