This study aimed to examine the impacts of current and previous experiences of food insecurity on depressive symptoms and suicide ideation.
Data from the 2011–2017 Korea Welfare Panel Study were used. A total of 10,706 adults who completed a 6-item food security measurement during all seven waves was included in the analysis. Sociodemographic characteristics and suicide ideation were measured and depressive symptom was assessed using CESD-11. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine associations with food insecurity experiences and depressive symptoms and mental health.
After adjusting sociodemographic characteristics, people ever experienced food insecurity for the last seven years had significantly higher odds of having depressive symptoms and suicide ideation than those never experienced food insecurity. Both current and previous experiences of food insecurity were positively associated with the odds of having depressive symptoms and suicide ideation. Prior experience of depressive symptoms and suicide ideation attenuated these associations.
This study showed that both current and previous experiences of food insecurity have negative impacts on current mental health. Policies and programs need to include not only people with current food insecurity but also those with past food insecurity to alleviate the lasting impact of food insecurity on mental health.
