Sol-Gel Sensors he sol-gel process, a method for the production of ceramic materi-als that was first reported some 150 years ago, is gaining renewed interest (1-4) because it provides a convenient way to incorporate heat-sensitive materials, including organic molecules and ac-tive proteins, in porous ceramic matri-ces. The relative (and sometimes mislead-ing) simplicity of sol-gel technology is also at least partially responsible for its rapid proliferation.Inorganic supports, particularly silicabased matrices, offer several advantages over organic polymer supports, including physical rigidity and high abrasionresistivity; negligible swelling in both aque-ous and organic solutions; chemical inert-ness (low interaction with analytes and slower poisoning by irreversible side reac-tions); high biodegradational, photo-chemical, and thermal stability; and excel-lent optical transparency and low intrin-sic fluorescence.
