The papers by Arend Bonen``Expression of lactate transporters MCT1, MCT4) in heart and muscle'') and Carsten Juel``Current aspects of lactate exchange: lactate/H+ transport in human skeletal muscle''), which appear in this issue, address topics that were presented and discussed at the 1999 ACSM Symposium``Exercise lactate levels: simulation and reality of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism''). Other papers presented on the same occasion will follow in due time. The symposium, which I had the privilege to organize and to chair, dealt with several important questions concerning lactate metabolism, its theoretical and practical significance and its role in exercise physiology. In the short note that follows, I will outline briefly the main areas that were addressed in the course of the symposium, together with the underlying reasons. It is the hope of the Editors of this journal, and mine, that the articles that follow will stimulate our readers to contribute further to the discussion on the role of lactate in the energetics of exercise.
