In this study, 117 elderly adults (mean age±standard deviation, 72.4±4.3 years; 11.9±2.6 years of education; 36 male and 81 female) were enrolled in a community-based walking program [Japan; date not given]. Of these participants, 79, 31 and 7 were initially categorized as having normal mood (NM), mild tendency toward depressed mood (MDM) and severe tendency toward depressed mood (SDM), respectively, based on the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Following the walking intervention, results of the word fluency test showed significant differences between the three groups (F(2,111)=5.345, P=0.006). Also, within-subject post hoc analysis showed significant improvement only in the SDM group. Overall attendance rate of each SDM participant was greater than 80%, and depressive mood was ameliorated. In parallel, post-intervention GDS results were significantly different between the groups (F(2,111)=8.304, P<0.001), and within-participant post hoc analysis showed amelioration in MDM and SDM. These results suggest that this community-based walking program provides dual benefits in cognitive function and amelioration of depressive mood in community residents with depressive tendencies.
