In this study, the rangeof glass electrode aqueous pH mea-surements Is extended to pH 17.6. Traditional problems as-sociated with high pH measurement, Including liquid Junction and cation errors and attack of the electrode, are analyzed. A liquid junctionfree cell (Beckman 39137 cationic elec-trode)[sample| ĄRadiometer G202BH pH electrode) can measure cation error on pH. A pH cell with liquid junction (Radiometer G202BHpH electrode|| sample| Radlometer K401 saturated calomel electrode) yields at 25.0 C pH values of15.6, 16.6, and 17.6 for 7.5, 12, and 17.5 m KOH solutions, after Inclusion of the respective measured 0.1, 0.4, and0. 9 pH unit potassium Ion correction. Calculated and measured pH values agree within 0.1 pH unit. At pH 16.0 an additional cation pH error of 0.1 and 0.5 pH unit Is measured respectively for Ó. 01 m sodium and lithium Ion concentrations. One hundred hours of Immersion In 17.5 m KOH solutionproduced no significant effect on the pH electrode.
