Cricopharyngeal-sphincter pressures were measured by manometry in nine patients with globus sensation and in twenty-two controls. Pressures ranged from 140 to 220 mm. Hg (mean 175·6±S.D. 26) in the patients with globus and from 70 to 140 mm. Hg (mean 96±S.D. 15·6) in the people without globus. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant, which suggests that hypertonicity of the cricopharyngeal sphincter is a cause of globus sensation.
