The pancreatic duct system of 120 adults, 20 infants and 20 fetuses was examined. Special attention was given to the patency of the accessory duct and minor papilla, and to the relation of Wirsung''s duct and common bile duct. Data obtained were correlated with sex and age of the specimens. The duct pattern as found in the adults is classified in 4 groups: (a) embryonic type (9 cases), in which, as in the embryo, no contact between the ventral and dorsal pancreatic ducts was established; (b) patent accessory duct (48 cases), in which the accessory duct opens into the duodenum at the minor papilla; (c) ansa pancreatica (21 cases), in which the inferior branch of dorsal and ventral ducts have formed a loop entering the duodenum at the minor papilla; (d) obliterated accessory duct (42 cases) in which partial or total obliteration has occurred. In 57% of the female and 49% of the male specimens is the minor papilla able to act as a safety valve in case of occlusion of the major papilla (no significant difference). In regard to reflux possibility of biliary products into the pancreatic duct system, 52% of the male and 46.6% of the female specimens have a common channel of more than 3 mm length between Wirsung''s duct and common bile duct (no significant difference).
