Evidence is presented to show that dimethylamine is derived, partly, from ingested choline and lecithin. The formation of dimethylamine from choline is dependent on bacterial action in the intestine. Results of experiments with trimethylamine suggest that trimethyla-mine is an intermediate in the conversion of choline to dimethylamine. Sterilization of the gut with neomycin reduced dimethylamine excretion by about 20%, suggesting that the major portion of the amine is derived from endogenous sources. Dimethylglycine, dimethylethano-lamine, betaine and DL-carnitine, injected into rats, caused no significant change in dimethylamine excretion. [C14] Methylamine and L-[Me-C14] methionine were separately injected into rats, and in both instances radioactivity was incorporated into dimethylamine. Methylamine is, therefore, an important endogenous source of dimethylamine and methionine serves as the methyl donor.
