Hot flashes are the most common symptom of menopause and affect up to 85% of women. Hot flashes are defined as a sudden and fleeting sense of flushing and heat in the upper chest, neck, and face. They are often accompanied by heart palpitations and can be preceded or followed by chills. 1 Although some women never experience hot flashes, other women report them to be extremely severe and/or bothersome.Unlike other symptoms that can only be assessed using patient self-report, hot flashes can be assessed using patient self-report as well as physiological monitoring. The purpose of this article is to provide information on a physiological monitoring system that can be used to assess hot flashes. The following provides a general description of the monitoring system, the type of data that are obtained when using the monitor, and strengths and limitations of the system.
