This book originated in a panel discussion on the ‘violence of austerity’, as part of a wider ‘How Violent is Britain?’conference, held in May 2014 and hosted by the University of Liverpool and the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies. While the media often focus on violence as a problem originating in society from dangerous individuals, this book convincingly shows that the most important wellsprings of violence are those perpetrated on society by the political system, through governments like that of the UK, that have since the 2007–2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) sought to impose highly damaging cuts and oppressive forms of state and privatized provision. Thus in this important edited collection what is often blandly called ‘austerity’takes on a clearer and more appropriately sinister meaning. Rather
