and that treatment of threatened abortion or premature labor with (synthetic) progesterone may not only be useless but even detrimental to the fetus. M. New discusses the generally disappointing methods used for prenatal diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Two chapters deal with the physiology of the thyroid and the parathyroid glands in the perinatal period. The recent flood of knowledge about the fetal thyroid function has already found widespread application in the screening of congenital hypothyroidism, whereas the parathyroid function of the fetus and newborn remains controversial. The last chapter by P. MacDonald et al. reviews in short the use of several hormones for fetal monitoring, and concludes that there is yet no endocrine function test or measurement that accurately reflects fetal well-being. The chapters are generally well written, concise and well referenced. One could not expect from this series that all (rare) endocrine disorders during pregnancy be fully described, but we especially missed a chapter on the influence of the maternal thyroid function on the nutritional status of the mother and on the fetal development.
