This paper reports three experiments carried out to examine the relations of auditory judgments of sharpness and brightness to certain characteristics of the sound spectrum. A psychophysical scaling method of absolute estimation was used to determine the dependence of sharpness and brightness on the frequency, the bandwidth, and the amplitude of a formant introduced to the sound spectra of noise and music samples. Results demonstrate that both sharpness and brightness considerably change with the formant frequency, whereas the effects of the formant bandwidth and the formant amplitude are relatively small. The relations of sharpness and brightness to the sound spectrum are generally similar; however, certain subtle differences between these relations can be observed in specific experimental conditions.
