Our human need to better understand our wodd leads us to desire ever-more-accurate data. DcVries et al.'s (1992) use of GPS and geographic information systems to map and analyze wildfires in the Everglades National Park provides a good example. GPS data also increase the usefulness of older photographic data. Using GPS as a navigation tool helps us more efficiently find sample points on photographs of otherwise featureless forests, lo-cate undocumented survey markers, and position a small group of four or five Landsat pixels.
