Reviews the methodology involved in identifying and verifying content and stylistic sources of variance in personality inventories. The evidence indicating that response style variance is of negligible importance appears to be far from conclusive. Previous item-reversal studies, which have been considered to yield unambiguous evidence for specific content responding, are shown to be consistent with a style position which differentiates 2 acquiescence processes. Agreement acquiescence, such as true-saying, appears to be a relatively minor determiner of responses to structured inventories. Acceptance acquiescence, such as subscribing to or denying heterogeneous attributes as self-descriptive, appears to be a major response determiner. These 2 types of acquiescence are usually confounded in analyses of personality inventories. Recent studies evaluating the existence of acquiescence variance are summarized.(2 P.
