Materials and MethodsAll the research on renal physiology and lactation was carried out on a herd of 15 camels (C. dromedarius). The animals were kept penned in a yard in the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. They were fed a diet of dry peanut hay in order to control their water intake. The air shade temperatures in the summer averaged 39 C. The animals were all examined when water was given ad libitum and following 10 days of strict water deprivation. For the renal studies the camels were restrained lightly (they could stand or squat) and No. 18 Foley catheters were introduced into their bladders. Blood was taken and infusions given via the jugular veins. Studies on the fate of injected tritium were carried out by either marking the blood prior to dehydration or rehydration, and following the disappearance of tritium, or by examining the appearance of tritium in blood after drinking radioactive water [6]. A special project was the glucose tolerance test when dextrose solutions were infused to test the reaction to glucose loading [7]. Body weight was determined by weighing on a large animal scale (Peles, Israel). Detailed descriptions of the determinations of electrolytes and hormones in blood and urine were presented in the articles on the specific subject. In general the methodology closely followed that used in human studies.
