Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral properties ofRhodopseudomonas gelatinosacytochromec550,Rhodospirillum tenuecytochromec553, andRps. capsulata(strains S.L. and 2.3.1) cytochromec2are reported. Spectra of cytochromesC550andC553are compared with those of Pseudomonad cytochromec551. The sequence homology between them was found to be reflected by similar NMR spectral properties for resonances of some invariant groups. Packing around a heme propionate was found to be similar, despite substitutions of amino acids interacting with the propionate, although a conformational difference in this region between cytochromec550andc553appears likely. The two cytochromesc2have different sequences and redox potentials [Pettigrew et al.,Biochim. Biophys. Acta503, 509–523 (1979)], but the two amino acid substitutions only cause minor conformational changes that are probably rearrangements of side chains close to the substitution sites.
