A study of the eruption of the upper canines was performed on 192 boys and 192 girls, mean age 11.5 years. Follow-up checks were performed at intervals of 6-8 months. Unerupted canines were recorded with the aid of casts and stereoradiographs. The frequency of unerupted canines at the series of examinations was recorded, as was persistence of deciduous canines, widening of the follicular space, position of unerupted canine and relative spacing and radiographic observations. At the last examination (mean age 17.8 years), there were 4 boys and 3 girls (1.8%) of the total series with unerupted canines. For the purpose of comparison, a group of adults, aged 22-36 years (39 persons), having impaction of 1 or both canines, was included. A palatal position of the canine and crowding in the canine region are the most important local factors involved in the impaction of maxillary canines.
