times follows from it should abound in the contemporary period is not, however, something they explain. Motives are important, but one wants to know the circumstances in which they arise and why they are sometimes unleashed on innocent populations and other times held in check. The least adequate pages in the book, unfortunately, are precisely those on the preconditions of genocide. Finally, it might be suggested that the typology needs another category to cover the situations quite common in the twentieth century that are not ideological but involve a struggle for power that results in genocide. For this and other reasons, the typology presented and the association of forms of genocide with types of societies is misleadingly neat. The truest social theory will reflect the ragged edges of its subject. These criticisms aside, The History and Sociology of Genocide is a highly original and valuable study that will have a major influence on how one teaches, and thinks about, genocide.
