Intravital native microscopy is a useful tool in the study of the microcirculation in vivo. The interpretaion of photographic findings remains controversial, owever, as native microscopy relies principally upon he presence of pigment in the hemoglobin contained n red blood cells. Theoretically, therefore, visible capllaries might only represent a proportion of the total umber of capillaries. The aim of this study was to stimate the proportion of capillaries, which remain nseen during native microscopy and so relate the umber of visible capillaries to the true total number f capillaries.
