In 1974, Chevron Overseas Petroleum Inc. was granted a license to explore for oil and gas in the interior of The Sudan. The original contract area was 199,227 square miles, which has been reduced by later relinquishment to the current area of 99,961 square miles. For comparison, the area is about the size of the state of Wyoming.
