Welding distortion occurring during the welding operations is capable of causing various adverse effects upon the strength and performance of welded structures as well as spoiling the visual effect of products. Consequently, it is an essential technical task to understand this phenomenon accurately and to reduce its effects. Hitherto, a variety of effective welding distortion reduction techniques have been developed for all types of materials; these can be divided broadly by time of application during the welding operation into the following 3 types: 1 pre-treatment in anticipation of distortion prior to welding operations1,2 2 methods to reduce directly distortion occurring during welding 3 correction after the completion of welding.2 It may confidently be stated that, amongst these, pretreatment and the postweld correction are the techniques requiring some sort of treatment by means of extra processes before and after welding. In contrast, from recent aspects of trends in the further development for rationalization of the manufacturing process of welded structures, there has been an increasing requirement for the prediction and reduction of welding distortion by means of precision control and also by means of process control whilst welding. Such concepts for the reduction and control of distortion during the welding process are desirable methods from the viewpoint of process control and cost. An attempt has been made to predict and evaluate the welding distortion by means of parameters based upon a range of welding conditions as a measure to control welding distortion during the welding process. For instance, Sato and Terasaki reported that transverse shrinkage and angular distortion can be accurately evaluated using heat input parameter Q/h2.3 Furthermore, Thermal conductivity theoretical examination concerning characteristics of welding distortion produced by multiple heat sources
