The dehydrogenase activity of diverse forms of human cancer tissue was detd. by means of the tetrazolium technic, and the in vitro effects of cancer chemotherapeutic agents were evaluated. These studies suggested the following generalizations: (a) There is a decided variability between cancer tissues from individual patients having the same type of cancer. (b) There is no apparent correlation between the intensity of the in vitro endogenous dehydrogenase activity of the cancer tissue and its clinical behavior. (c) The in vitro effect of urethane on the dehydrogenase activity of cancer tissue appears to parallel the radiosensitivity of the tissues. (d) Combinations of chemotherapeutic agents sometimes enhance the in vitro inhibitory effect of a single constituent.
