Bilateral surgical neodecortication did not prevent perfect retention of a Pavlovian nictitating membrane response in rabbits if the original learning took place in the normal state but did abolish the acquired responses if the animals were hemidecorticate at the time of original learning. Decortication subsequent to normal acquisition of a light-tone differentiation improved the level of differentiation, by abolishing responding to the negative conditional stimulus, but increased conditional response onset latencies in comparison with those of a normal control group. The data are discussed in terms of the normal neurological substrate of Pavlovian conditioning in the mammalian brain.
