Reviews research findings concerning the development of visual function in higher mammals, particularly monkeys and cats. Emphasis is placed on electrophysiological studies of the neuronal properties in the geniculostriate visual pathway concerning 2 basic questions: the role of visual stimulation in early life on normal visual neural development and the role of the environment in modifying visual neural function. The methodology of developmental studies, particularly rearing and electrophysiological techniques, are briefly described. Data regarding normal development and the effects of deprivation on visual optics, the retina, the lateral geniculate nucleus, and the visual cortex are outlined. The effects of more selective types of visual deprivation—monocular occlusion, artificial strabismus, restricted pattern exposure, and acute conditioning of cortical unit properties—are also described. In addition, genetic and environmental influences on visual development are briefly noted.(8½ p ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
