These experiments concerned the sensory epithelium and ganglion in the posterior tentacles of the terrestrial snail A. fulica. Extracellular, multi-unit responses were evoked after epithelial stimulation with winds, at velocities as low as 25 mm/s. The odor of mixed vegetables elicited a response at a minority of recording sites. Intracellular recordings (N = 60) were obtained from 2 classes of neurons, 1 tentatively identified as a monopolar interneuron, the other a bipolar interneuron. Two of the impaled neurons responded with small slow depolarizations after the presentation of food odors. Each cell consistently responded to certain odors, while failing to respond to others.
