Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the brain may be treated with conventional surgery, gamma-knife or linear accelerator radiosurgery and embolisation. Estimates for the costs of these treatments have been obtained from centres in the United Kingdom and have been used to calculate the costs of three policies for treating brain AVMs. Policies that approximate to present clinical practice are relatively cost-effective. For a single treatment session embolisation costs less than other therapies. Used preoperatively embolisation adds 30–40% to policy costs and when used as the only therapy multiple treatment sessions make embolisation the most costly therapy. Detailed cost-benefit analysis is required for embolisation in the treatment of brain AVMs.
