1. Cow's milk samples Sixteen samples of commercial milk (pasteurized at 120•Ž for 3sec) were collected from manufacturer A in Kyoto prefecture on January 22-29 and February 4-11 in 1980 (one sample a day). In addition, 34 samples of commercial milk prepared by 15 other manufacturers in Kyoto, Hokkaido, Tokyo and Aichi prefectures were purchased from local markets in Kyoto city during January-May, 1980, and January-April, 1982, and 3 samples (long-life milk) made in the United States, France and Switzerland were obtained in September, 1980. All the samples were packed in polyethylene-coated paper containers. They were stored at 2•Ž and analyzed within 4 days after commercial distribution, except for the imported samples. Raw milk samples from lactating Holstein cows were collected individually in Pyrexglass flasks from 5 dairy farms in January, 1980, and from one dairy farm in July, 1980. These samples were conveyed to our laboratory with cooling at 0•Ž and analyzed immediately. All the dairy farms were located in Kyoto prefecture, and raw milk from these farms was supplied to manufacturer A.
