In 1964 a group of investigators confirmed that persons with an excellent oral hygiene showed no signs of gingivitis. However, when hygiene measures were stopped, dental plaque developed, closely followed by inflammation of the gingiva. Researchers observed that in a few weeks the gingival crevice area was covered with plaque and a general gingivitis was manifest. In addition they found that if the plaque was removed and careful oral hygiene reinstituted, the gingivitis disappeared in a few days. If plaque was allowed to develop, gingivitis would invariably follow, and when the plaque was removed, the gingiva would become healthy again.
