Conducted 4 experiments with a total of 48 undergraduates and 17 18-24 yr olds from the community. Ss were required to judge whether strings of letters were words or nonwords. When nonword distractors were pronounceable, reaction time was significantly faster for concrete than for abstract low-frequency nouns; for high-frequency nouns there was no effect of concreteness. This interaction was not reliable when distractors were unpronounceable or when an initial familiarization task was administered. Results indicate that, at least under certain circumstances, lexical decision involves retrieval of semantic information.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
